Facebook Places
Well…its here, Facebook places is launching tonight. This new service from Facebook is very similar to Foursquare, you can “Check in” at various businesses/locations and announce to your Facebook friends that you’re there. You can also find out who else is at that location right now. This is an optional feature and is not required, this could prove very helpful for friends meeting and businesses wanting to correlate physical real-world traffic and social marketing. We’re definitely excited here at QC Total Tech to see what possibilities are in store for this long awaited slick new feature.
This feature is available on the latest iPhone app for Facebook and touch.facebook.com

This is a stalker’s dream. A “friend” could find that you are not at home and rip you off.
Jason Howell
It is an optional feature, this kind of technology currently exists with Google Latitude and Foursquare. That’s why I’d be cautious about who I share with. Watch our blog, we’ll have an article coming out soon on how to setup privacy with this new feature.

I so agree eit you on this it is kinda of a blessing but yet a nightmare for those that will abuse this !!!!!
nicole
i totally agree or a wife or husband could find out your not where you say you are and your busted facebook is gonna ruin alot of marriages and relationships
Name (required)
i think fb already has for alot of people
Tannis
The relationships will be ruined as a result of the choices the couples make…not because of Facebook. Facebook may just make it more obvious! Not their fault.
Jose
I think that soon we can use here also..

what about an app for Android?? iPhone has lowest share, yet all effort goes to this platform. I love my droid
Jason Howell
I agree! I use a Droid as well and absolutely love it, Facebook is very inconsistent when it comes to Mobile, their two mobile sites and their 3 mobile apps (iPhone, Android and BlackBerry) are all very different. Which is odd considering the size of Facebook’s userbase. Hopefully they’ll put a focus on that soon in getting them all up to speed.
Tila
Most Android phones are ready with touch.facebook.com. I know my G1 is. They offer it on that app.

Where do you dowload this feature? I have a BB.

How about this app for Blackberry? I think it would be smarter for the Facebook people to cover all platforms
Jason Howell
I’m sure its slated, but no official announcement yet for BlackBerry or Droid. Stay tuned to our web site for details and updates!

We really are not interested in maintaining to facebook pages. The places creates a new one for the business. How can these be merged?
Jason Howell
Not really much to be maintained, it wont require updates and such like a standard “fan” page would.
Jason Howell
We just posted another article on Facebook Places privacy settings. Check it out!

Is there a platform for the Clutch? If so, I can’t wait to use it.
Brendan
ok… so yes.. you can adjust it so that your friends can’t tag where you are.. but there is absolutely nothing stopping them from checking-in at “I’m hanging out at John Doe’s house”… this isn’t even an issue just for users with facebook’s. Anyone with friends with Facebook places are at risk of their locations being post.. without them even knowing! This is a terrible idea…
Jason Howell
These types of services already exist with Loopt, Foursquare, etc. Facebook brings it to the masses though. It will be interesting to see how this progresses and if any limits/restrictions are put into place by law. There is nothing in place now, there are big numbers of people using these types of services. It just takes that one time though, look at the Craigslist killer.

so there are lots of reasons why we should stay with facebook?
It appears to me with their many new blocks, and non networking rules the reasons to stay are becoming limited.
who ever made you think it’s a social networking site?
Steven
how do i use this
z
This is a bad idea!
jodi
A VERY BAD IDEA
jodi
i don’t like this 4 square thing..i mean buddys right ppl could find out where and when ur home and rob u…or worse..no sorry i don’t agree with it..yes this is a very bad idea..what ever happened to CONFIDENTIATLY on facebook…..

Its only a danger of you let it be. If you have your facebook locked down and only have people you know on there than why would it be a danger? If you are irreponsible with your facebook then you are asking for it
Commonsens
ARE YOU INSANE?!?!
Listen, if you want to throw way confidentiality, privacy, security: use that crap! Stalkers everywhere will be grateful!
But that is NOT the REAL reason why this crap exist:
To homeland security, fbi, cia and all other “intelligence agency” and governements: what you do is ILLEGAL : using a FAKE pretend to SPY on people! If it was ONLY in your crappy country, fine, but internationally is an CRIMINAL ACT OF WAR.
Jason Howell
You should check out our article on Facebook places privacy, otherwise simply don’t use the feature.

This is a great opportunity for businesses as well as promoting local commerce. As a business owner, you can post your location and share with friends/fans. You can also help promote your favorite spots, restaurants, events, businesses, etc. to your friends.
If you don’t like it, block it.
trgu
how do u use it plz!!!
Jason Howell
Visit touch.facebook.com on your smartphone and touch “Check In”
jj
is this just a phone app? i know just on the iphone right now but when it goes to bb and the other smart phones, is that all it is? a phone app? it wont be posting your location when you sign onto a computer, will it?
Jason Howell
No, this is a mobile app, and can also be used on GPS enabled phones using touch.facebook.com. It is an OPTIONAL feature and not mandatory, it does not perform any kind of automatic updates or location posting. This is an entirely voluntary process.
