What is a “web presence”?
You may be hearing the phrase “web presence” these days in various media outlets but, you might not know what the heck it is! A web presence is simple term for your company’s existence on the internet, this is not just your web site. A web presence is all the things on the internet that you have some sort of control over. This would include your web site, Facebook fan page, Twitter account, Flickr channel, YouTube, Wikipedia articles, etc.
So what’s the big deal? The existence of your company on the web has evolved, it started out as just having an e-mail address, then a home page, then your own dedicated site, then social media profiles, now its about all of these things working hand in hand together….creating an overall synchronized digital version of your business online. Having an effective web presence is so important, you want to make sure you’ve got a good mix and you are using the elements of a web presence appropriately in both terms of cost and time. I saw an article yesterday that talked about the “branding lie” this was really interesting to me, one of the things the article talked about the most was that you can’t measure the results of branding efforts. I totally agree with this article! I do not look at a web site as “building your brand”, it just sounds cheesy. I look at your web presence as reaching out to existing customers, advertising your business to new ones and finding useful ways to save you time without damaging your image or becoming a “Press 1 for ….” type of business. That’s what a web presence is, all of the various internet pages, sites and profiles your company has working together to accomplish your goals.
Happy Webbing.
